The acquisition of reading is a milestone in a child’s educational development.  To hear a child pronounce the words on a page brings great joy to both parents and teachers.  Yet, reading is so much more than decoding the words on a page.  As students develop as  fluent readers, they learn to check their own reading for understanding, to self-correct, and to re-tell the the story or information they have read.   Students at Phoenix learn that an author of good literature entices the reader to immerse oneself  in an adventure the author has created.  It is through reading that the world opens to our students.

Reading for information in math and science is equally important.  Understanding history comes from the ability to be a strategic reader.   Strong reading skills provide access for students to be inquisitive about endless topics in their lives.  No matter the path a student selects for life, reading lays the foundation for success.  From Kindergarten through 8th Grade, Phoenix teachers recognize the importance reading plays in a child’s educational development.

Likewise, the counterpart to being a strong reader is the ability to effectively communicate, both orally and through writing.  Phoenix students are provided multiple opportunities to express themselves as they learn strong communication skills.  Our students emerge from our program with writing skills necessary for success in their future.  Students are provided the opportunity to write in multiple genres, furthering their communication skills.

Phoenix teachers recognize that students need to think logically and methodically.   Through aligned math instruction, students learn that while accurate calculation skills are important, the application of those skills are of critical importance.  Students learn that numbers follow patterns, that there are patterns to observe in nature and science, in architecture, in our environment.  Math instruction opens the doors to the exciting world around us.

We want our students observing, analyzing, and synthesizing information they encounter.  A perfect setting for these skills to be developed is through regular science instruction.  Through investigations, experimentation, and knowing the scientific process, students learn the fundamentals that scientists use in their work.  Hands-on learning allows students to question ideas and manipulate materials in order to grasp a solid understanding of scientific concepts.  Regular instruction in science is a priority throughout our school.  It is not ‘fit in’ as time allows in a teacher’s day.  Students, especially in grades 4-8, receive daily science instruction – something that is not readily observed in many schools.

When we think of societal issues, the examination of history allows students to grapple with their own critical thinking and problem solving skills.  Students research and ferret out information that helps them develop an understanding of historical perspectives for local, national, and world events.  Phoenix teachers recognize the importance of history to a child’s education as they prepare them for their own life experiences.
